The Papal Cross is the emblem of the authority of the Pope, head of the Roman Catholic Church. The three bars are usually thought to represent the trinity: God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit. It also represent the Pope's triple role as Bishop of Rome, Patriarch of the West, and successor of St. Peter, Chief of the Apostles.
