St. Philip was an apostle of Jesus Christ who is mentioned as taking part in the feeding of the five thousand. Tradition tells us that he was a missionary in the regions of Galatia and Phrygia; the apostle was crucified and then stoned to death. Two loaves of bread and a budded cross is the most familiar symbol for Philip. The cross refers to his missionary journeys among the barbarians in upper Asia and Phrygia. The loaves of bread recall Philip's presence at the feeding of the five thousand. These symbols speak of the useful life Philip lived for Christ.
