St. Simon was an apostle of Jesus Christ, and he is also referred to as Simon the Zealot. Traditions say he returned to Jerusalem to head up the church there after James the Lesser was martyred. Simon's martyrdom is uncertain, although various martyr weapons are shown as his symbol. This symbol shows boat oars, the axe, and a saw as it was thought that Simon was cut in two.
