St. Simon was an apostle of Jesus Christ and he is also referred to as Simon the Zealot. Traditions say he returned to Jerusalem to head up the church there after James the lesser was martyred. Simon's martyrdom is uncertain, although various martyr weapons are shown for his symbol. The shield of Simon Zelotes shows a fish in a fishhook; this refers to his ability as a great fisher of men.
