Saint Hilda was the daughter of a king of Northumbria, England. At age 33, Hilda entered Chelles Monastery in France, where her sister was a nun. She became the head of the double monastery of Streaneschalch, at Whitby, and encouraged the poet Ceidmon. She is represented by three coiled snakes.
